Dear Kitson

I have in front of me your letter
F.1264/376/10 of the 3rd February and your telegram to Nanking No.85 of the 25th January about the appointment of a Political Adviser for Hong Kong. The question of whether or not this post should revert to the Colonial Service after three years need not, we hope, hold up action to appoint a suitable officer
now.
You will no doubt agree that the reply given by my Secretary of State in the House to a Question by Mr. Janner on the 27th January in which he said that "The Governor has asked for the appointment of a Political Adviser with experience in China and action to give effect to his request is in hand" commits us to the creation of this appointment and to filling it as soon as possible. As Miss Ruston explained to Scott on the telephone, Mr. Creech Jones is personally interested in this appointment, which he regards as one of major importance calling for a first class man. He has asked who has been suggested for it and we hope that you will be able to propose a name or names to us in the very near future.
we appreciate that shortage of staff makes it difficult to fill a post of this kind but it is one which has been under consideration for a long time and you have no doubt had it in mind. You will
G.V. KITSON, ESQ.
